Cops and... erm, Copping-off-ers?

Police brutality has taken on a new dimension in Uttar Pradesh, India. Supposedly carrying out 'Operation Romeo' to combat sexual harassment in a local park officers instead began beating up young couples out on dates. Television images of victims being slapped, punched and having their hair yanked have resulted in an eruption of anti-police protests and two policewomen being suspended.

Local residents are seriously (and understandably) pissed off - Uttar Pradesh apparently has one of the worst crime rates in the country and many feel police time could be better spent. Despite admitting that young people fraternising in the parks is a worry for many parents and community elders (pre-marriage dating is frowned upon in conservative India) the attacks seem to have been fairly indiscriminate and without warning - one couple were taken by such surprise that they were unable to get the words out to tell their assailants that they were, in fact, married to each other! And bizarrely (considering the police action was supposedly to protect young women from abuse) another individual was assaulted despite sitting on a bench on her own.

You don't need me to add my tuppence to this, it speaks for itself. What a bunch of cunts!
